This is a classic betel mortar from the Schouten Islands with a seated caryatid long-nose ancestral figure. The figure has the classic knees to elbows posture with hands gripping something at the chin. The eyes are deep set with nassa shell insert remaining in one. Notice the typical small cup at the top and the extreme use that has worn the mortar section down to nub. The piece is 7" in height, dates to the 1940s and sells for $2000. Questions?
