Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement
This is another ancient and fine shell trumpet collected from the Schouten Islands that lie off of New Guinea’s north coast. Used for calling family members out fishing the nearby waters or working in the gardens; these trumpets can belt out a loud signal when blew by someone with a strong set of lungs. These are kept inside near the kitchen cooking fires and thus develop a thick black patina over the generations. This one is 14" in height, dates to the late 19th century. sold
