This large and elegant food platter comes from Lake Sentani on New Guinea's north coast. This is an old and classic example collected in the early 1940s by Gene Gach while he was stationed nearby during WWII. Gene was a rare soldier who made the effort to build a make-shift canoe and paddle to the various villages along shores of the lake. He compiled a small collection of artifacts that have been in his possession ever since. This plate with its obvious significant age therefore must date to the earliest part of the 20th century. The piece is 35 ¼" in height, comes with a custom display stand. sold
