This striking piece is an old Southern Abelam lightwood headdress called "notu." These are worn by either man or yam. This example is very light and fragile being made from balsa wood. The pigments are bright and strong and the handle at the base shows significant age and wear. The piece is 27 5/8" in height, dates to around 1940. sold
