I judge Abelam yam masks from several factors. First is aesthetics and this one with its nice, simple openwork of radiating eyes is very good. Then the quality of manufacture as evidenced by the tightness of the coiled cane technique—again this one ranks high. Then the age is determined by the patina on the reverse and the layers of pigments that indicate a long ceremonial life—again this one has numerous layers of red, green, blue, orange and yellow pigments coming through. Thus, these factors combine for an excellent, older yam mask, 10 ½" in height. sold
