This is a soft and supple older tapa cloth from Collingwood Bay, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. Tapa such as this are worn by women around the waist and/or used as a light cover when sleeping. The design on this example is very fine with a series of rectangles containing twisted arrow motifs. Notice the slight fading in the area between the tips of the opposed arrows. The piece is 58" by 39", dates to the early/mid 20th century and sells for $1800. Questions?
