Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement

This unusual piece is from the Abelam culture and is made from coconut shell. There are piercings around its perimeter and was probably used as a small yam mask but there are similar small masks that I have seen attached to the reverse of the tall headdresses worn by newly initiated young men. This one has an engaging smile and shows good age. It is 4 ½" in height and sells for $700. Questions?
