Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement


This is a classic, pre-contact, stone-carved ancestral mask from the Murik Lakes area at the mouth of the Sepik River. The carving is deep, clear and confident—even after over a hundred years of use. The mask is large, wide and substantial in a way that does not come through easily in photographs. You can see the soft modeled surface on the reverse typical of pre-contact masks. The piece is 21 ¼" in height, dates to the late 19th century. sold
