This is a fine example of a classic Nukuma yena figure from the Washkuk Hills north of the middle Sepik River in New Guinea. The face is deeply scooped out with eyes on stalks, a wonderfully refined nose and an impish grin. There are the remains of bird feathers around the chin — the telltale signs of it being ritually used. The pigments are both western and traditional. The wood is dense and hard with a few stable longitudinal cracks coming down from the forehead. The piece dates to the 1940s, is 38" in height, comes with a custom display stand. sold
