This is a fine example of a classic Nukuma yena figure from the Washkuk Hills north of the middle Sepik River in New Guinea. The face is deeply scooped out with eyes on stalks, a wonderfully refined nose and an impish grin. There are the remains of bird feathers around the chin the telltale signs of it being ritually used. The pigments are both western and traditional. The wood is dense and hard with a few stable longitudinal cracks coming down from the forehead. The piece dates to the 1940s, is 38" in height, comes with a custom display stand. sold
