Rare is the tapa beater that makes the leap from artifact to art. Yet, this example from the Papuan Gulf comes as close as I have seen. The lines and composition are as elegant and refined as one can get for such a utilitarian object carved out of one of the densest woods on the planet — black palm. The tapa beater is 13 ¼" in length, dates to the early 20th century. sold
