The lime spatulas from Collingwood Bay in Papua New Guinea's Oro Province are some of the most rare and elegant in New Guinea. They are usually much more restrained than the Massim spatulas to their southeast. The present example is very old, unusual in form but still recognizably classic Oro Province. The surface is a series of incised inter-locking scroll motifs, there is a medial ridge and the edges are perforated for shell attachments. The surface has a dark aged brown patina with nice remains of white lime in-filling of the incised design. The spatula is 17" in height, dates to the late 19th/early 20th century. sold
