This mask is a classic Biwat piece from the Yuat River that flows to the north into the Sepik River from the Schrader Mountains in Madang Province. The piece has the classic raised bumps on the cheeks, overhanging eyebrows and the triangular motif coming down from the flattish cap on the forehead. The mask shows significant age by the shell scraping marks on the reverse — an early way of smoothing the interior surface of old masks. The piece is 15" in height and sells for $3600.Questions?
