This large wood churinga comes from Australia's Western Desert area. It is unusual for the all-over motif of squares overlaid with concentric diamonds carved in relief. The churinga is the most sacred of aboriginal artifacts and represents a particular person's ancestral travels. This one has a deep chocolate-color patina and dates to the 1920s.
