This old wood yam mask from the Southern Abelam area known as the Wosera has an engaging wide-eyed expression with arched eye brows. At first glance the style of the piece doesn't seem that old but several factors belie that. First is the thick, dark and glossy patina on the reverse-that includes the cut out handle found on early pieces. Then of course is the pierced nose and ears-but it is the manner of these piercings with them being dug out, almost crater-like in appearance that really brings home the age of this small yam mask. I would say this piece is pre-1920, it is 8" in height. sold
